Fall Fashion—Your Way!

Fall Fashion—Your Way!

There are three kinds of people who open that notoriously thick September issue of Vogue.

The Fashion Curious may leave it lying around for a couple of weeks. All those pages are overwhelming! But eventually she gets the desire to explore the new season for fresh ideas. The Fashion Curious is looking for a trend or two that feels comfortable to add to her existing wardrobe. She’s selective and smart about her additions.

Then there is the Fashion Savvy: she picks that Vogue up right away and leafs through it confidently, looking for items that resonate with her wardrobe plan and needs. The Fashion Savvy will always let practicality rule but she enjoys a sense of fun and adventure about discovering new looks. She’ll be excited by at least five to ten trends.

The third reader is the Fashion Renegade. She is either at the curb waiting for her Vogue (she knows what day it comes!) or has already looked at all the shows online. For the Fashion Renegade practicality is less of a concern. She loves style for style’s sake. She always looks interesting, and her outfits take risks, some of which succeed outstandingly and some of which become conversation pieces.

Which type are you? Whichever team you play on, I’ve got great ideas from this season’s lineup.

Fashion Curious

If you feel like you’re Fashion Curious, you want to keep up with the times, look up to date and fresh. You want your presence to count and you want to spend your money wisely.

Here’s what you can try this season:

Pointy-toed pumps

A wider pant

A plaid pant in shades of gray

Oxfords or loafers

Polka dots

Spectator pumps or flats

A fur stole for evening

Fashion Savvy

If you feel like you’re Fashion Savvy, you love creating new looks and having fun with clothes. You walk into a room and people admire how consistently well-put together you are. You enjoy the process of updating each season and have a strong sense of what you like and don’t like.

Here’s what you can try this season:

A pant-suit with wider legs and a fitted jacket

Decorating your bottom half: colored pants, plaid pants, wider pants, leather pants

A camouflage print bag

A black jumpsuit

A fur wristlet for evening or a fur stole for day

Leather gloves covered in sheer netting for evening

Pointy-toed booties

Fashion Renegade

Your normal is everyone else’s risk zone. For you, creating with clothing is like breathing – it’s essential to your well-being. Your look can be overwhelming to others but it doesn’t bother you. You don’t fear the worst-dressed list and often end up on the best-dressed list.

Here’s what you can try this season:

An oversized blazer pantsuit

Wide-legged leather pants

A printed or embellished jumpsuit

A white leather bag or white shoes

Boots with fur trim

A long sweater over a long skirt (transparent for the truly bold!)

Ten Professional Image Tips Every Working Woman Should Know

Ten Professional Image Tips Every Working Woman Should Know

Professional Woman

How is your image in the workplace? Do you feel heard and seen for your professional contributions? Is your visibility at its peak? We’ve all heard about people who got passed up for promotions when it seemed they had all the necessary qualifications. Don’t let this be you! Stand out, get noticed, and get acknowledged when you dress smart for the workplace. Here are my top ten tips for increasing your professional presence.

  1. Choose quality fabrics. Cashmere, tropical weight wool, silk, and Pima cotton will hold up through a hectic business day.
  2. Look for structured garments. Blazers rather than Safari jackets. Pencil skirts rather than flowing skirts.
  3. Find a good tailor. Perfect fit is essential for looking professional. Clothes should skim the body.
  4. Remember the jacket. Whether it’s over a sheath dress or pants and a top, a jacket always makes you look more authoritative.
  5. Check your colors. Dark colors are more professional than lighter colors. Like bright colors? Use them as your accent colors, not for the whole outfit.
  6. Solid colors are more professional than prints. If you like prints, stick to small, traditional ones—checks, small florals, paisley, plaid.
  7. Moderate heeled pumps. Flip flops are for the beach and strappy sandals for the dance floor. But a little bit of color can be fun.
  8. Show your personality with your jewelry.  Make it classic. And avoid pieces that jingle and jangle like multiple bangle bracelets.
  9. Moderate makeup. But keep the bright red lipstick for night. Women who wear moderate makeup are perceived to have higher interpersonal skills.
  10. Well-cared for hair. Wash and wear styles can be easy. But make sure you get regular trims so it doesn’t look unkempt.

Tips for Swimsuit Shopping

It’s that time of year again! Summer!!! And time for the dreaded swimsuit-shopping trip. Make that trip a little easier with a few simple tips to find the best swimsuit for your body shape.

Shirring does wonders to hide a large tummy.  So do diagonal lines, prints, and dark colors. Look for textured fabrics and suits with built in control panels. Avoid shiny fabrics.

If you have a large bust, look for swimsuits with underwire or molded cups. Also, halter tops with wide straps and a band underneath the bust gives great support.  Look for suits that are sized like bras are and two piece suits where you can mix and match top and bottom sizes.

If you have a small bust, look for shirring or ruffles across the bust. Also, a little padding doesn’t hurt. Avoid bandeaus.

Don’t like your bottom half?  Look for darker colors on the bottom. Ombre suits are great. Keep bright colors and embellishments up next to the face. Avoid boy shorts. Look for a higher leg opening that lengthens the leg.

To give some curves to a boyish shape, look for details, such as ruffles and other embellishments, across the bust and hips. Keep the waistline simple.

Add Some Color for Spring

It’s almost Easter, so it’s almost Spring! YEAH!!!!  Time to add some bright, clean and fresh colors to your wardrobe. For eye-popping color combinations mix tangerine and cherry red, lilac and nectarine, maritime blue and margarita green. Or keep it classic with black and white, or navy and red, or sand and navy. Mix classic colors with bold ones in combos such as navy and lemon zest, linen and emerald, or black and flamingo pink. Whichever way your color wheel turns this spring, it will land on something juicy.
